Lowriders

The phenomenon of lowriders is huge in the States, and although lowriders have been here for a few years, the UK has been slow to pick up the trend.

In Birmingham city centre however, you might just see a group of Birmingham lowrider owners cruising the streets with their unique bikes.

Ian Cumberbatch and Etienne Amion are into the urban hip-hop scene and are the first to bring lowriders to Birmingham.

Lowrider phenomenon

Etienne, Ian and Farrah

Lowrider bikes began back in 60s America. Cars were customised with hydraulics to allow them to ride low and 'bounce'.

Mexican and Puerto Ricans wanted to get involved in the lowrider movement, but most couldn't afford the expense of customising a car.

They began to customise bikes by bending the forks to allow the frames to be lower, and then added colour, mirrors, bells...the lowrider bike movement was born.

"Getting lots of attention is the main reason you go for something like this is the attention you get. My BMX gets me from place to place but sometimes it's good to get the crowds going on my lowrider."

So what's the appeal of a 70's style bike to a teenager or twenty-something growing up in a technological age?

"It's urban, hip hop style and pretty unique here" says Michael. "I haven’t seen any being rolled around in Birmingham apart from the ones we go around on. Maybe next summer we’ll have everyone rollin' around on them.

"The wheels remind me so much of the American lowrider cars and it's very hip-hop - that’s what I love about them. Especially the idea of rolling in big groups."

The lowrider is definitely not just a means of getting from A to B. They're a bike made for cruising - they need to be looked at. Hip-hop stars like Snoop Dogg and Pharrell Williams are encouraging the appeal of the lowrider scene, often featuring them in their videos.

Ladies love lowriders

It's not just a hip-hop 'rude-boy' that's hooked on these bikes. The ladies are loving lowriders too. Not only the bikes beautiful to look at, but they also have mirrors perfect for touch-ups, or applying lipgloss, as Farrah demonstrates...

And it's not just mirrors that adorn the lowrider, they can be personalised in just about any way imaginable.

"You can twist frames, paint them, have different wheels, spokes, mirrors, forks, peddles, spinning wheels. Each and every bike is different and everyone adds their own touch to their bike. There are 7 or 8 frame types in any colour you can imagine and you can customise it to your own style.

"You can get hydraulics for them which lets the bike bounce and lowers them a whole lot. You can put soundsystems and boomboxes on them, hook up your iPod or mobile phone - even add neon lights." says Ian, who has owned his lowriders for over a year.

Ian Cumberbatch, 21, and Etienne Amion, 18 are such lowrider enthusiasts they have created their own company, BabyBoy Lowrider, to bring the bikes to Birmingham and the rest of the UK.

Urban culture

"Basically lowriders represents the urban culture that people wanna be a part of" says Etienne. "Nowadays as life is so fast moving, relaxing on a bike is not part of most people's day. Once people have a go they're hooked, and the attention that you get from being so unique is amazing. It’s unique to Birmingham and there are only a few stockists in the UK and we’re the only ones in Birmingham.

Ian is keen to make the lowrider Birmingham's must-have accessory, "Everyone is fashion conscious here, its like kids who can’t afford a car, or are too young to get a licence are gonna look cool on a lowrider.

"A lot of people buy them to display in their house but we wanna hit them out to people with a cool urban background coz that's where they start from.

To these guys lowriders aren't just transport, they're a way of life, a style statement, a culture, or in their words "pimped-out".

"We wanna introduce people to the lowriders and represent the culture with the bikes" says Etienne. "We wanna organise meetings of lowrider owners to relax and celebrate the culture in Birmingham."

"The urban scene in Birmingham is getting ready for lowriders and people want to be part of it," concludes Ian, "It’ll take off."

Trip to the Big City Again!

Today was a late start, had to get to the Big smoke to hook up the boys from Second Son and view stock for Fall 08, but as usual i got up late.
Got to new street only to board a train made in 1985 with cabins and wooden chairs! Not only that windows you could open on the train doors! i saw a old ass man chancing his head by sticking it out of the window while we were moving at 100+mph!
Got to Euston at 1.30 and made my way to Brick Lane to hook up with Jay as i was a little lost.
Ended up on a different route to the same place so we just met at Glorias.
I may say not the warmest of welcomes, only a slight smile from the girl.
Oh well Saw the welcoming face of Jay and we made our way to the new pop up shop on Brick Lane.

Saw some new shit from the boys will and rufus who have done alot of this stuff with there own hand! some pretty detailed pieces man and you guys have some nice shit dropping in candy soon! Not only that they've added a few pieces to the range some really nice straight leg twill denim with a tapered cut. V-Nice! Props to Second Son for giving me a pair for doing nothing but repping them hardcore!!

Cool Kids To Headline NBA 2K9 Tour

The Cool Kids will have the honor of headlining the fourth annual Bounce Tour, sponsored by the makers to 2K Sports' basketball franchise "NBA 2K9"

The Cool Kids have already recorded a song for the video game, titled "2K Pennies". The 2K soundtrack will have an array of musicians. This list features Bobbito, Aceyalone, and Phife from a Tribe Called Quest.

Alongside these musicians, the Cool Kids will also have the luxary of playing as themselves in the game.

2K Sports Director of brand and lifestyle marketing Tim Rosa says "We selected the Cool Kids for various lifestyle partnerships with NBA 2K9 since they are completely inline with the 2K Sports brand."

Dates and other performers have not been announced. The group's debut album "When Fish Ride Bicycles" is expected to drop before the end of the year.

A couple of days ago I was offered an opportunity to do a test shoot for the winter illustrated issue of Vice magazine or iD is it, one of the two, all I know is I was asked to do the shoot by a freelance stylist for both magazines. It as a jampacked day full of complexity in photography. I am a photographer who does not like the flashgun idea at all but I might invest in one some day... Here are some shots of the day!

Still, im studying interior design and design management and I will have my degree in the 2 years left... Not a propper photographer, just a hobbyist!

Received the Oki-Ni newsletter today and usually I just delete it straight away for the following reason's 1) I do not wish to spend money when I really can't afford it 2) I usually cannot afford anything on the website, so 2 kinda cancels out 1 and finally 3) sometimes I just refuse to pay £300 for anything mass produced. Back to the reason I posted this. Above are some quite nice pieces of footwear from Alejandro Ingelmo - that's until I saw the price tag of £319 but I thought I'd share as I'm bored as hell. Tuesday was a good day on a whole except for a wasteman post 1990 boy group looking security guard!
Wasteman in Dungarees, tims, and a avirex jacket and a cream prada beanie to top it off!
Nerd signing got everyone hyped! Me and the extended and ever growing candy fam rolled down, me literally on my bike, to see a big ass cue with pure faithful Bape heads, Fape heads, and BBC / Ice Cream Heads supporting the cause hard.
Caught some jokes in the Cue with Leon and Geoff then made our way in to Flannels for the first time very packed!
To walk in and just feel the eyes in your neck, i was starting to feel abit parra.
Only to start taking pics and be interrupted by FAM-LAY asking where i copped my Jordans.
Then when i went to get my book signed Pharrell himself asked for my trainers and made me stick my foot on the very clean white sheet.
Left the store feeling pressured and hated on by the waste security guard.
only to get a call to come back and show Mr Williams my BMX to waste man security annoyance!

Went to get my nightly wash as usual and i hear sounds as if im watching the goonies underground with sloth banging on pipes, then next thing i know NO water for about 10 minutes!
